Special Column by the UFI CEO

The Strategic Position and Future Direction of the Korean Exhibition Industry

Chris Skeith OBE, CEO

UFI, The Global Association of the Exhibition Industry

As we move deeper into 2026, the global exhibition industry continues to navigate an environment defined by both opportunity and complexity. Five themes are shaping how organisations plan, operate, and deliver value: the irreplaceable strength of human connection, the certainty of uncertainty, the rising expectation for meaningful experiences, the accelerating integration of technology and data, and the central role of sustainability in decision-making.

Against this backdrop, South Korea's exhibition industry occupies a distinctive position, one characterised by strong foundations, clear government support, and significant potential for further international growth.

The global context: Five trends shaping the industry

Human connection remains our greatest competitive advantage. Even as technology and artificial intelligence advance rapidly, nothing matches the trust and authenticity created through face-to-face interaction. In a world defined by geopolitical uncertainty, digital saturation, and increasing automation, this human dimension has become more essential, not less.

Uncertainty has become the operating norm. Geopolitical tensions, supply chain fragility, and economic volatility have moved from contingency planning into everyday decision-making which require stronger organisational resilience and agility. Rising costs  also demand smarter, flexible approaches. The industry has become skilled at navigating unpredictability, but the future will require deeper scenario planning and closer collaboration across the entire exhibition ecosystem.

Expectations have fundamentally shifted. Delegates and exhibitors want more than well-structured events. They expect meaningful, personalised experiences across the full journey, from initial engagement through to post-event community. This extends the event lifecycle and places renewed emphasis on demonstrating return on investment. Partnerships are deepening, with organisers, venues, local businesses, community partners, destination stakeholders, and policymakers collaborating in new ways to create richer, more connected experiences.

Technology, artificial intelligence, and data are reshaping exhibitions. AI, data integration and connected platforms are driving efficiencies, enabling smarter decisions and freeing teams to focus on strategy and creativity. As costs rise, data-driven insight becomes even more critical for optimising resources, justifying participation, and demonstrating venue.

Sustainability is now a strategic imperative. It shapes how events are delivered, how organisations assess participation, and how travel and investment decisions are made. Environmental impact is evaluated alongside commercial value in boardrooms worldwide. Addressing the industry’s shared challenges in measurement, reporting, and requires strong partnerships across the entire ecosystem.

These five themes provide the context within which all exhibition markets now operate. They influence how organisers develop their portfolios, how venues invest in facilities, and how exhibitors and visitors evaluate where to commit their time and resources.

South Korea's position in the global landscape

South Korea holds a well-established position within both the global and Asian exhibition markets. According to UFI's World Map of Venues, which tracks venues with gross indoor space exceeding 5,000 square metres. Within the Asia-Pacific region, it ranks 4th with a total indoor capacity of 322,817 square metres as of 31 December 2024.

These figures reflect a mature and well-developed market. South Korea features world-class venues such as KINTEX, COEX, and BEXCO, all supported by excellent infrastructure and strong connectivity. The country's exhibition organiser landscape is diverse and sophisticated. Several of the major venues, including KINTEX and COEX, are also important event organisers in their own right.

Major international players such as RX Global and Informa Markets are active in the market, alongside a wide range of professional domestic exhibition organisers such as EXPORUM, Messe Esang, etc. This combination of venue operators, international organisers, and domestic specialists creates a competitive and dynamic environment.

South Korea's B2B exhibitions are particularly focused on high-growth sectors, especially in technology and advanced manufacturing. This sectoral focus aligns well with the country's broader industrial strengths and economic priorities. South Korea is also important as an outbound sales market for many international organisers, with Korean companies actively participating in exhibitions worldwide.

Performance data supports this positive assessment. According to UFI research, net space sold in South Korea increased by an impressive 8.3% in 2025, and strong growth is expected again in 2026. This sustained momentum reflects both the resilience of the domestic market and the continuing demand for trade exhibition platforms in key sectors.

Distinctive strengths and strategic advantages

One of South Korea's most significant advantages is the strong government recognition of and alignment with the exhibition industry. AKEI's affiliation with the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy demonstrates a clear understanding at policy level of the economic value that exhibitions generate. This alignment between industrial strategy and the exhibition sector creates an environment where trade shows are seen not as peripheral activities but as integral to national competitiveness and trade promotion.

South Korea has also developed a strong approach to standards and quality assurance. AKEI has established robust systems for certifying and auditing trade shows to ensure quality and professionalism while at  the international level, South Korea has been actively proposing new guidelines and standards to increase global relevance and influence. This aligns closely with UFI's work in establishing ISO Technical Committee 354, the first dedicated ISO committee for the events industry. South Korea's active participation reflects both its technical capabilities and its commitment to raising standards across the industry.

The country's infrastructure also represents a major competitive advantage. Venues are modern, well-equipped, and professionally managed. Connectivity, both domestic and international, is excellent. The supporting services ecosystem, from stand construction to logistics, is mature and reliable. These operational foundations create confidence among exhibitors and visitors, particularly those from international markets.

Opportunities for further growth

Despite these strengths, there remain significant opportunities for South Korea to strengthen its position further within the global exhibition landscape. The most important of these relates to internationalisation. While the Korean exhibition industry is strong domestically, many shows remain primarily focused on the domestic market. Bringing in more international organisers, exhibitors, and visitors would enhance the value proposition of Korean events and position the country as a more significant hub within the Asia-Pacific region.

In addition to internationalising shows in Korea, there is also a substantial opportunity for increasing outbound sales. There's a high demand in many segments for South Korean exports, and as a result, international organisers such as RX Global and Informa Markets have built substantial sales volume, bringing Korean exhibitors to their events elsewhere in Asia and Europe. This is a growth area which the Korean government should continue to actively support.

There are practical pathways to achieving this. Some Korean venue operators and organisers have begun expanding internationally, managing venues or developing events in other markets. This overseas experience can be leveraged to support the internationalisation of domestic shows. Understanding how to attract and serve international participants, adapting content and marketing to appeal beyond the domestic market, and building partnerships with international organisations and trade associations all become easier when there is direct experience of operating in multiple markets.

The sectoral strengths in technology and advanced manufacturing also create opportunities. As global supply chains continue to evolve and as industries such as semiconductors, electric vehicles, and advanced materials grow in strategic importance, South Korea is well positioned to develop exhibitions that serve these sectors at a regional or even global level. The key is ensuring that international buyers, suppliers, and decision-makers see Korean exhibitions as essential platforms rather than primarily domestic events.

Government support provides another avenue for growth. The institutional framework already exists. AKEI's relationship with relevant ministries, combined with the involvement of organisations such as KITA (Korea International Trade Association) and KOTRA (Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency), creates a strong foundation for coordinated efforts to enhance the international profile and reach of Korean exhibitions.

Future competitiveness and strategic direction

Looking ahead, several factors will determine South Korea's competitiveness and influence within the global exhibition industry. Digital transformation and the integration of artificial intelligence will continue to reshape how events are delivered and experienced. South Korean companies and organisations are generally strong in technology adoption, and this capability should be reflected in how exhibitions are planned, marketed, and executed. From data-driven exhibitor acquisition to personalised attendee journeys and AI-supported matchmaking, the tools are available. The question is how systematically and effectively they are deployed.

Sustainability is also becoming a competitive differentiator. International exhibitors and visitors increasingly evaluate events on environmental performance alongside commercial criteria. Venues, organisers, and the wider ecosystem must integrate sustainability across operations, from energy and waste to transport and materials. South Korea's technological and industrial strengths position it well to lean into this area.

Talent development remains critical. The exhibition industry requires a blend of commercial acumen, operational expertise, customer service excellence, and increasingly, technological literacy. Ensuring that the workforce has access to professional development, international exposure, and opportunities to learn from best practice in other markets will strengthen the industry's long-term capabilities.

Experience-driven event design is another area where South Korea can differentiate itself. The expectation among exhibitors and visitors for meaningful, personalised, and memorable experiences is rising globally. South Korea's strengths in technology, design, and customer service can be combined to create event experiences that stand out. This extends beyond the show floor to include the wider destination experience, cultural engagement, and the overall journey that participants take when they attend an event in South Korea.

A forward-looking perspective

South Korea's exhibition industry has strong foundations but has yet to reach its full international potential. World-class infrastructure, solid government support, a diverse organiser landscape, sectoral strengths in high-growth industries, and a commitment to standards and professionalism all provide an excellent base. The opportunity now is to build on these to increase global reach and relevance.

This will require focus on five priorities: internationalising domestic shows by attracting more international exhibitors, buyers, and content; leveraging overseas expansion by venues and organisers to strengthen domestic events; continuing to invest in standards, quality, and professionalism through initiatives like ISO; embracing digital transformation, data integration, and AI to enhance events delivery and experience; and, embedding measurable and meaningful sustainability across the entire ecosystem.

UFI is committed to supporting South Korea’s growth and importance in the Asia Pacific region. We are bringing a delegation to South Korea from 16 to 18 September 2026, in collaboration with AKEI to meet senior government representatives, visit key venues and engage with local industry stakeholders.

The global exhibition industry is navigating complex conditions, and success requires strong foundations, clear strategy, adaptability, and collaboration. South Korea has the foundations. The opportunity now is to accelerate internationalisation, leverage technological and industrial strengths, and position Korean exhibitions as essential platforms across Asia-Pacific and beyond. The potential is significant, and I look forward to seeing the Korean exhibition industry continue to grow.
